The 2161 Mic In Lundahl Transformer Kit from SPL, is an optional microphone input transformer available for installation in a number of Lundahl-ready SPL audio devices. Presently, these include the Frontliner, Channel One, Track One, Gainstation 1, Gainstation 8 and the Goldmike Mk2.
The Lundahl transformer is felt, by many in the industry, to impart a "warmth" that is commonly associated with vintage gear. These transformers are designed for the low end and lower mids to sound rounder and full-bodied, and with more punch, with the highs sounding more open, improving the aural signal presence. The reasons for this are reduced odd harmonics, which can produce harsh top end impressions, and a slower, more subtle characteristic compared to electronic stages which might cause just a more increased sound.
When used in SPL preamps or channel strips, the input transformers add around 14 dB gain, depending on the microphone used. This must be added to the scaled values. The additional passive gain relieves the complete unit permanently at any gain level. That's why the input transformer is more important in preamps, but to benefit from all possible sonic effects and full operational safety, both input and output should be equipped with transformers. If SPL preamps only offer an input transformer option, the simple reason is not enough space.
The Lundahl, and transformers in general, transmits the signal by induction. This means there is no static connection (like a wire) to transmit the signal. This protects the unit from damage caused by power failures in the input/output connections. In addition, hum problems are effectively avoided if balanced connections are used throughout. That's why transformers can be very interesting for live units or in units used in facilities that need highest operational safety (broadcast, sound reinforcement). Another notable advantage for many live and recording applications is that much longer cable lengths are possible with minimized loss of signal quality.
The Lundahl transformer option is offered to give present or future SPL users the choice of upgrading at a later date, to add to the user's investment and improve the sounds of the processor.
