About this bird:
The Rose Robin is found in south-eastern Australia preferring wet forest and rainforest habitats during spring and summer, moving to drier, more open habitats, during autumn and winter where they are sometimes seen in farms and town gardens when migrating. The most acrobatic of the robin genus ‘Petroica’, the Rose Robin, has a darting, tumbling flight when feeding on insects, mainly foraging in the upper to mid-canopy, occasionally feeding from the ground. It is very active, flitting from tree to tree or to the ground and will not return to the same perch, unlike other robins. Even when perched, they regularly shift position by making short flights every few seconds. They often join mixed-species feeding flocks, accompanying thornbills, fantails and other small insectivorous species. The Rose Robin breeds in pairs, with the female incubating the eggs and both sexes feeding the young. The compact, cup-shaped nest is placed towards the outer end of a branch or in a tree fork, and is made of green moss, with some twigs and bark, lined with plant down or fur and camoflaged with lichen. Land-clearing for urban development, especially along the coast, has caused local extinctions of Rose Robin populations as they are quite sensitive to habitat fragmentation and the loss of understorey and, like so many native animals, they’re also killed by cats who kill more than 1 million birds in Australia every day.
