Mais la passion pour le ballon rond refait sans cesse surface, et c'est elle qui gagne finalement la partie. Maître de son destin, Patrice Bernier connaît un parcours fascinant : il grossit les rangs de l'Impact en 2000 et, après trois saisons, déménage ses souliers à crampons en Norvège, en Allemagne et au Danemark. Il foule le même terrain que des vedettes comme Thierry Henry, Robbie Keane, Pavel Nedved et David Villa, puis devient l'un des plus grands joueurs de l'histoire du soccer au pays. Revenu dans le giron de l'Impact au début de la saison 2014, il en est nommé capitaine. À son dernier match, après une carrière de 18 ans, il aura disputé plus de 150 matchs en saison régulière. En 2019, il est nommé entraîneur adjoint de l'Impact et entame ainsi un nouveau chapitre de sa vie.
