A seminal moment in Australian military history, the successful Allied assault on Italian positions in Libya in 1940 represented the first major ground offence by Australian troops in WWII. Although the Germans recaptured most of the ground the Italians had lost, the Allies did hold Tobruk and its crucial harbour. A major turning point of WWII, the Siege of Tobruk is famous for the courage, mateship, determination and humour of the Aussie diggers who held off the forces of fascism for an extraordinary 241 days. Seeking to prevent Nazi occupation of Lebanon, the Allies invaded in June 1941, capturing most of the region by the middle of July.
