Capable of an impressive 44mph on roads and over 30mph across country, the BT-7 relied on its exceptional speed for protection rather than its light 20mm armour — a philosophy that made it a dangerous raider but a fragile fighter when caught in a stand-up engagement.

Crewed by three — driver, loader, and commander-gunner — the BT-7 was armed with a 45mm main gun and co-axial machine gun. Losses were catastrophic in the opening year of Operation Barbarossa, with over 2,000 destroyed or abandoned, but Soviet industrial output ensured they remained in service for almost the entire war. Over 5,000 were produced — quantity has a quality all of its own.
