melatonin: less is more
Rather than giving you an excessively large dose of melatonin (3 mg or higher), we opted for a micro-dose of melatonin (0.3 mg) instead. This super small quantity replicates the amount normally produced by the body each night: 0.075-0.3 mg. It’s notable that 3 mg of melatonin (which is considered the norm in retail stores) is somewhere between 10-40x higher than the normal physiological quantity. Therefore, 3 mg of melatonin may be considered a “pharmacological dose” due to its size and drug-like effect: heavy sedation. Here at Youtheory, we believe that individuals should refrain from using a “pharmacological dose” for more than three consecutive nights (as a rule of thumb) and instead opt for a more natural sleep aid.

“Pharmacological dosing” can lead to a number of issues, including: dependency (via up-regulation of brain receptors and down-regulation of internal melatonin production), tolerance (leading to a loss of response over time, especially frequent waking during the night), and a “delayed phase-shift” in the circadian rhythms. When you have excessive melatonin still in your system upon waking in the morning, it can shift your circadian rhythms so that your bedtime and wake time move later into the day (i.e.,it “delays” the sleep/wake cycle, which is the opposite of what most individuals are aiming for). The primary goal of melatonin supplementation should be to sync your internal clock and to advance (not delay) your endogenous melatonin rhythm so that you feel more tired earlier in the evening.* The physiological dose accomplishes this and is ideal for extended use as a natural sleep aid.*
