The REAL Story of Pirates - Fun Facts, Tall Tales, and Awesome Activities offers fascinating information about life at sea during the "golden age of pirating" as well as brief profiles of famous pirates of the past. There are over 40 illustrations, (most of which are meant to be colored), and descriptions of navigation devices, tools, and weapons used by pirates.

You'll learn other interesting facts, too. Every year, on September 19th, many people today participate in "International Talk Like a Pirate Day." Did you know that real pirates didn't really say things like "Argh " and "Matey," and "Walk the Plank?" This pretend-style of "pirate talk," which is often heard in films and on TV, is actually based upon the fictional character "Long John Silver," as portrayed in the Disney movie Treasure Island by actor Robert Newton.

Did you know, too, that General George Washington's military commanders were able to defeat the powerful 18th century British Navy (the young American Colonies had only 31 converted ships to call their own) with of the help of privateers, whose numbers included freed slaves? Privateers were sailors who became pirates for hire.

Did you also know that many common phrases heard today came from the classic age of pirates and seafaring? For example, the phrase "pipe down" now means to be quiet; aboard a ship, the expression originally referred to the last signal of the day coming from a "bosun's pipe" (or whistle), which indicated it was time to go to sleep. Many other such common words and phrases are explained in these pages.

Facts and stories like these (in addition to fun coloring pages, a true or false quiz, an elaborate treasure maze, and a challenging word search puzzle) are included in the book, PLUS suggestions for hosting your own pirate party, along with ready-made invitation examples you can copy and send to friends

There are suggestions for reading the book and discussing pirates with younger children, too. The publisher provides permission to make limited copies (for personal use, only) of the book's coloring pages so your child's finished work of art can be mounted in a frame or on the fridge, without having to tear it from the book. The REAL Story of Pirates is recommended for independent readers aged nine and older, though (as noted) younger children will enjoy reading it with an adult who can help with unfamiliar words and expressions. The REAL Story of Pirates is the first in a planned series of interesting information and activity books for young people. Future titles in this series will include The REAL Story of Dinosaurs; The REAL Story of Horses; The REAL Story of Space Flight, and more

Mid at best
Style: dog ball launcher
It’s mid at best. Requires a little trick to get it to go forward and not just fly up in the air., it’s also not telescoping. It just comes apart into two pieces.

Wouldn’t buy again
Style: dog ball launcher
Compared to the namebrand thrower this one sucks. It just throws the ball way up in the air.

Good size, Durable, Easy to use
My dog doesn't really play with balls that much. But she does love a laser which I was hoping the light in this ball might mimic for her. And it does. She loves this ball. And the winter months when the days are short finding games we can play at the park is critical for her well-being. The ball came in an attractive packaging with a charger and charged quickly. It's a simple push of the button on the light to activate it. It will turn off on its own but light back up when it's moved, which is handy. The light has a soft glow to it which is pleasant to be around. The ball is easy to see at night and has a good bounce to it as well. My dog chewed on it for quite a bit and it's held up really well, so I will say it's pretty durable and chewable. The weight in the ball is nice and it's an easy throw. My only suggestion is to make sure that you have the light piece locked in place first. I have thrown it where the ball and the light went in two different directions. And that was my fault. Lol We have had some great fun with this ball at the park. For the short winter days it's a perfect addition to your pet's play routine. We love it.

Defective on arrival
Second ball defective. First ball received would not light. Second ball battery charged and locked. When unlocked to switch on light, the cylinder stuck in the ball and will not come out. I'm very disappointed. I've sent back and hope the third functions properly.
