The Hoodie That's Already Thinking About Tomorrow

Fleece, reimagined. Comfort that doesn't cost the planet.

There's a version of the classic pullover hoodie that never really evolves — same construction, same blend, same trade-offs it always had. And then there's the American Apparel RF498 ReFlex Fleece Hoodie, which takes everything people love about a heavyweight pullover and rebuilds it from the yarn up with materials and decisions that actually mean something.

This is not a recycled-label-on-a-conventional-product situation. The ReFlex Fleece is engineered differently from the ground up — and you can feel it.

The Fabric: Where the Story Really Starts

The RF498 is built from a 7.6 oz. 70/30 blend of combed ring-spun US cotton and recycled polyester at 31 singles, constructed as a 3-end lightweight fleece. That three-end structure is the key distinction: it creates a fabric that achieves meaningful weight and warmth while staying noticeably lighter and more breathable than traditional fleece constructions of the same weight class.

The 100% combed ring-spun cotton face yarn means the outer surface — the side facing the world, and the side receiving your decoration — is pure cotton. That matters enormously for anyone printing or embroidering on this hoodie. Screen ink behaves predictably on cotton. Embroidery thread catches and holds cleanly. DTG ink bonds properly. You don't get the unpredictable absorption or sheen variation that synthetic-blend face yarns can introduce. The recycled polyester lives in the fleece structure underneath, doing its job of adding recovery and durability without interfering with decoration quality on the surface.

Heather Grey uses a 65/35 cotton/recycled polyester blend for its characteristic marled texture.

Design Details That Decorators Will Notice First

American Apparel clearly built this hoodie with customization in mind, and several design choices make that obvious.

The 1" rolled-back dropped shoulder seam shifts the seam slightly toward the back of the shoulder — a thoughtful move that expands the printable real estate across the front chest and makes placement more forgiving for screen printing and embroidery alike. It also gives the silhouette a relaxed, contemporary drape that reads as intentional rather than oversized.

The back neck patch is purpose-built for easy customization: a clean, flat canvas that takes heat transfer labels, woven patches, or printed branding without the complications of a curved or seamed surface. For anyone building a private-label line or branded merchandise program, this detail alone saves time and effort at the decoration stage.

The drawcord-free, unlined hood keeps the silhouette clean and the profile streamlined — no hardware to snag in a dryer, no lining to bunch up or add unwanted bulk. It's the kind of decision that comes from thinking about how a garment actually gets used and worn over time.

Construction Built for Longevity

The 1x1 rib with spandex at the cuff and waistband delivers stretch and recovery that conventional ribbing can't match. Most ribbed hems and cuffs start to relax and lose their snap within a season of regular wear. The spandex content here preserves that elasticity — the hoodie returns to its intended shape after every wear and every wash, maintaining the clean, pulled-together look of a fresh garment well into its life.

The oversized pouch pocket has genuine capacity — not a decorative gesture. Side seams keep the fit structured and consistent through repeated washing. And the recycled tear-away label closes the loop on the sustainability commitment: no scratchy neck tags, and the label itself is made from recycled materials.

Responsible Through and Through

The RF498 is made with US-grown BCI (Better Cotton Initiative) certified cotton and recycled polyester — both responsible material choices that reduce environmental impact at the source. Production takes place in a facility holding both OEKO-TEX® and Fair Labor Association (FLA) certifications, verifying that the fabric is free from harmful substances and that the workers producing it are treated fairly. American Apparel has also eliminated polybags from packaging across most of its product line, removing single-use plastic from fulfillment at scale.

One of the best Project Management Books I've Read!
    Format: Kindle
This was a really great read for many reasons. The focus on ensuring your project has a strategic purpose is so important these days, where Program and Project Managers need to make sure the projects they are leading are providing value to the organization. The framework is one that can be applied immediately with the explanation and tools provided in the book and on the author's website. The real-life stories and projects were not only fun to read, but very helpful in understanding how to apply the framework. The examples were very thorough and helpful. There is great information on what is needed from a PM to be successful including managing the team and stakeholders. On top of all that, when I got to Chapter 10 it was like a bonus chapter for me. Chapter 10's focus is on "managing your inner game", and has great information on ensuring you have the right mindset to be successful. Project Managers have the opportunity (and challenge) to work with many different personalities and in many challenging environments. This chapter provides really great information on how to navigate those waters and be successful. Chapter 10 could seriously be a book in itself. Chapter 12 was yet another bonus chapter, especially for lifelong learners. It's all about the idea of taking everything we've learned and applying it to our life. As the author states, our lives are essentially a project. Why not apply the same principles to ensure we are achieving our purpose and providing value, with yet again, really great examples to get us started. Anyone who leads or is involved in any kind of projects or who wants to work better in a team environment would benefit from reading this book.

Strategic Management Made Simple and Effective
    Format: Hardcover
I told Terry Schmidt that would be a better title for his book, “Strategic Management Made Simple and Effective”. The time-tested Logical Framework Approach (LFA) that Terry champions goes far beyond project management. With its exploratory LogFrame matrix leading from inputs to outcomes, outcomes to purpose, and purpose to goal, the LFA forces you to understand the reason for the project. Projects are not executed for their own reason but to achieve something specific. The LogFrame traverses the ladder from inputs to goal through objectives with success measures, ways to verify success, and assumptions that must hold true be successful. Terry adds his own concept -- that he calls the Implementation Equation™ -- to help you build the LogFrame: IF inputs AND valid assumptions, THEN outcomes / IF outcomes AND valid assumptions, THEN purpose / IF purpose AND valid assumptions, THEN goal. This methodology offers you a way to view the LogFrame with multiple perspectives: scientific method, strategic planning, project management, risk management, management by objectives, and, although he does not mention it, also quality management. In particular, his use of assumptions has helped me to redefine my view of risk management. Rather than brainstorm a large list of possible risks in a registry that becomes impossible to manage, I use the probability that the assumptions needed for success are not valid – and their impact on achieving success, as the true risks that must be actively managed. A highly entertaining as well as informative book, “Strategic Project Management Made Simple”, or whatever you choose to call it, should be the first guide you reach for when building a portfolio, creating programs or products, or starting a project.

LFA is now the Project Manager's Super-Power!
    Format: Hardcover, Format: Hardcover
This books is not just for PMs, it is also for people in operations that are facing the challenge of aligning the output of their day-to-day activities and multiple projects with the bigger picture of their enterprise. Personally, what I liked the most (and which it has been very helpful) is the visualization and alignment of the strategy with the operational side of the business: Logical Framework Approach (LFA) -- I call LFA my hidden super-power! Strategy is an abstract concept and often difficult to communicate to those responsible for the execution of the projects. Terry made this task very simple by addressing the most important aspect of any project: What are we trying to accomplish and Why?
