While most people realize horse riding is a type of physical exercise, many people do not realize today horse riding is also a popular sport. Equestrian events have been a part of the Olympic Games since 1900 and include dressage, the art of training a horse to perform precise, specific movements in a flowing and fluid manner. Horses who perform dressage movements are commonly referred to as dancing horses because it appears the rider is along for the ride when, in reality, the rider is the leader and the horse is their partner, much like a dance.
