"We were encamped in the Tekiramis mountain range during the Miotnas insurrection, burning under an unrelenting sun and suffering strong artillery fire, when suddenly I saw Raktorak Wadek crossing the terrain separating my advance post from the rearguard positions. He ran, dodging explosions and sniper fire, with a medical cryogenic conservation box under his arm. After reaching me, he opened the box, asking: "May I serve you some Nuboe liquor sir?” Inside the box there was a bottle with its unbroken seal of origin and a glass, both conveniently chilled. Amazed, I told him: "Raktorak Wadek, I can hardly believe it!”. "Certainly sir,” -he answered- “there was no Tancros juice left for mixing. A shame. I will have the logistician responsible for it whipped ". I have never enjoyed a drink as much as on that day. Later, when the enemy launched an assault against our position, Wadek didn't leave my side. He covered the door, firing unceasingly while I organized a counterattack over the radio. A notable individual, oh yes... Raktorak Wadek served in the Vanguard Infantry and the Kurgat Regiment and was butler to Lord Marshal Zukrot. To speak the truth, I wouldn't know how to handle myself without him now."
Colonel Valtok, extract of a conversation heard during the Victorious Commemoration Day feast. Stronghold-Bastion of the Crimson Lake. Ugarat Planet.
In Morat Aggression Forces, Raktorak is the most elevated rank among the non-commissioned officers and designates a veteran soldier with superior organizational and combative qualities. In every regiment there is usually a Raktorak for each company, assigned as assistant and right hand of the captain or commanding officer.
Considered to be "first among peers" amongst the Morat non-commissioned officers, the Raktorak serves as an intermediary between the soldiers and the commanding officer, in charge of establishing and maintaining the discipline and behavior standards of the company. As a sign of respect, officers refer always to Raktoraks by their ranktitle followed by their name, an old custom harking back to the Knife Renaissance.
As assistants to the commanding officer, Raktoraks have to help them not only in their daily tasks, but also as their bodyguards and personal escorts, being responsible for their direct security. An axiom of the Morat Aggression Forces is that no Raktorak dies after his officer, especially among the Suryat Regiment, where they are their constant shadow on the battlefield. As the right hand of an officer, Raktoraks are usually deployed as their representatives in high priority missions, where they act as their eyes and fists. To reach the high requirements of the rank, a Raktorak must be superior in all levels to any other Morat non-commissioned officers. The Raktorak selection process is a true reflection of this requirement, following the theme of Morat military mentality: all the candidates are locked, unarmed, in an empty room and the one left standing when the door is opened is the only one worthy of the position of Raktorak.

Influential and Insightful
Frantz Fanon's The Wretched of the Earth is an important document in the history of imperialism capturing the state of the Algerian revolution and the struggle for independence in the Third World at a crucial time. The year was 1961, and the book was published just before Fanon's premature death. Algeria was a year away from independence. The Congo had just achieved a travesty of independence. The Cuban revolution was still fresh. Fanon was born in Martinique but was fully committed to the Algerian cause by the end of his life. His insights into the pitfalls threatening newly-independent nations have proved to be uncannily accurate. His voice is of his time and ahead of his time. I would recommend this book to those wanting to learn more about the Algerian War and to those curious about the huge effect of this book on the leftists of the 1960s.

A SIXTIES CLASSIC WE HAVE MOVED ON FROM OR BACK OF/
Format: Paperback
i am 90 years old. i was a student in the 60s but i had already served in the military so i was already in my 30s. Which meant with a wife and twins i was more concerned with earning a living and finishing my doctorate than participating BUT it was a time when we swung one way as a nation and we were part of the post war swing of the world. The world had developed empires, WW1 began their downfall, ww2 pretty much finished the rest BUT it opened the door for new imperialism. On one hand colonialism melted away. The greatest empire ever, the British faded to legend and an island itself breaking up. American imperialism sprouted along with Soviet. And now China and Russia. One old model, Russia, one new model China. But the world i cyclical not progressive so China may become another imperial power. Fanon is an antidote as are other writers of the 60s so good to see new editions. Many rebels are now out of print. History is always ignored but it is always present.

Brings history to life
Format: Paperback
Got this book as a read aloud before traveling to London. We did a tour of the Tower of London and used the map in this book, marking off the different parts we walked theough- talking about which parts were the setting of different scenes in the book. Reading this gave my kids a real love and personal connection to the Tower. Cliffhanger endings to different chapters. My 9 and 6 year old lived it. My 4 year old couldn't keep up.
