When a horse's body temperature rises due to exercise, travel, or hot weather, it begins to sweat. The evaporation of sweat assists the horse in cooling down and regulating its body temperature.

Excess sweating leads to the loss of fluids and essential body salts or electrolytes found in sweat.
The vital electrolytes include Sodium, Chloride, Potassium, Calcium, and Magnesium, which are crucial for various bodily functions, particularly muscle contraction, the nervous system, and maintaining cellular fluid balance.

Potassium is generally plentiful in a horse's diet, as most forages like pasture, hay, and haylage are rich in potassium.
However, sodium and chloride are present in much smaller amounts in forages, and even horses doing light work require daily intake of sodium and chloride.
Most compound feeds such as cubes and mixes include some sodium and chloride in the form of salt, but if the amount consumed is low, it may not suffice, necessitating supplemental electrolytes. Likewise, hard-working horses, especially in hot or humid weather, will lose greater amounts of electrolytes and water through sweating. Regular feed may not provide enough to replenish these losses, making additional electrolytes essential for encouraging drinking and promoting rehydration to maintain health and performance.
A horse engaged in moderate work, such as trotting or cantering, can lose up to 5-7 liters of fluid and 50-70g of electrolytes in an hour, with losses increasing as the intensity or duration of work rises, particularly in hot and humid conditions!
