Weingut Battenfeld-Spanier is located in Hohen-Sülzen, a town in the Wonnegau district of Rheinhessen. The estate, established in 1991, is owned and managed by the husband/wife team of Hans-Oliver Spanier and Carolin Spanier-Gillot. The couple oversees over forty hectares of vines planted to Riesling, Spätburgunder and Sylvaner in Wonnegau’s limestone-rich soils which add precise, vibrant minerality to their wines. Farming has been conducted organically since estate’s inception and biodynamic practices were integrated in 2005. Battenfeld-Spanier’s driving belief is that their wines are “liquid earth” and the grapes’ job is to act as interpreter to translate the spectrum of aromas and flavors provided by the stones and soil.

The Hohen-Sülzen Riesling is sourced from the eponymous vineyard which is designated Erste Lage by the VDP. The Erste Lage classification denotes world-class vineyards of especially notable characteristics. This Riesling pours a pale gold color with silver-green reflections. A gentle swirl of the glass releases mouthwatering aromas of white and yellow stone fruits tinged with notes of dried herbs and spice. The focused palate presents juicy flavors of Mirabelle plum, white peach and apricots accented with a touch of white pepper. Refreshing acidity and a beautiful, underlying minerality carry this gorgeous Riesling toward a seemingly endless, saline-laced finish. Enjoy with most seafood, including sushi, pan-seared flounder or stir-fried vegetables.
